ASP Career Opportunities

 

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), a 122 year-old international nonprofit scientific and education organization with a mission to advance science literacy through astronomy, has a position open for a creative, experienced, well-organized and motivated person to serve as the Director of Development for the ASP. The successful applicant will manage and execute a comprehensive fundraising program (semi-annual appeals, individual donor cultivation, major gifts, planned gifts, public grants, corporate/foundation funding and grants, fundraising events) and will assist in advancement efforts. The director will provide strategic development input to the senior management team and will formulate a three-year development plan working in concert with the executive director, senior staff, and an active Board of Directors. The position reports to the executive director, with room for growth.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for managing and executing a comprehensive fundraising program for the Society, including:

    a. Semi-annual appeals.
    b. Special appeals.
    c. Individual donor cultivation.
    d. Major gift acquisition.
    e. Planned giving.
    f. Public grants acquisition.
    g. Corporate/foundation cultivation, funding, and grants.
    h. Corporate affiliate sponsorship.
    i. Annual meeting sponsorship.
    j. Fundraising events.
    k. New fundraising initiatives.

  2. Responsible for formulating a three-year development plan including goals and targets, in conjunction with the executive director, senior staff and the Board of Directors, to increase individual unrestricted gifts, member donors, and corporate, foundation and public support.
  3. Manage and grow a portfolio of benefactor and corporate/foundation contacts by personally developing relationships with prospects, soliciting prospects and ensuring the efficient and effective use of CEO time on fundraising. Assist in establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships with the primary goal being to utilize these connections for funding opportunities.
  4. Work with the administrative and education staffs to solicit, develop, write and submit public and private grant proposals.
  5. Identify new sources of possible gifts to the Society from individuals, corporations, foundations or governmental sources.
  6. Manage and execute the creation of all development materials and communications (solicitation letters, cultivation packets, event materials, annual report contributions and development narratives, web materials, etc.).
  7. Provide strategic development input to the senior management team and the strategic planning and implementation process.
  8. Manage the development office functions including information and data systems, financial systems, budget, recognition, and events management.
  9. Staff the Board of Directors and appropriate committees on development matters, including the coordination of Board giving and solicitation efforts.
  10. Assist as appropriate in advancement functions, and ensure coordination of the development program with advancement functions, including:

    a. Marketing and promotion.
    b. Name-branding, public relations, social media.
    c. Website development and activities.
    d. Annual meeting efforts.
    e. Membership development, services and campaigns.

  11. Manage the advancement office functions including information and data systems, financial systems, recognition, and events.
  12. Supervise staff/volunteers as may be assigned.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Master's degree from an accredited four-year college/university, or equivalent preparation and experience.
  2. Demonstrate at least six years of experience and successful results in individual major gifts, corporate sponsorships, grant writing, government funding along with significant achievements in direct mail appeals.
  3. Knowledge of and experience with planned giving programs and direct mail solicitations for such a program.
  4. Travel required, both in the San Francisco area and nationally.
  5. Proven ability in identifying new contacts, cultivating, soliciting, acknowledging and stewarding benefactors.
  6. This is a hands-on, results-oriented position and the individual must demonstrate ability to set and manage multiple priorities and deadlines, work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team member, and produce creative solutions. Must be a self-starter, able to work with minimal support staff, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and must be well organized.
  7. An appreciation for astronomy and the importance of science literacy is important.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Senior leadership experience in development at a cause-based membership nonprofit organization.
  2. Exposure to astronomy and/or space science and related communities.
  3. Membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
  4. Certificate in fundraising management or CFRE.
