Family ASTRO Kits

Family ASTRO logoWhat is a Family ASTRO Kit?

We are developing two kinds of kits in the Family ASTRO project:

Family Kits

These kits, designed to be taken home after a Family Event, include games, activities, and information sheets that can be used by a wide range of families to explore a particular subject in astronomy. Some of the take-home activities are introduced at our Family Events, but most can easily done by a family just by reading the included instructions.

Leader Kits

These kits are for educators and/or scientists who are leading a Family ASTRO Event. They include instructions, materials, and hand-outs for the three kinds of Family ASTRO activities: the self-guided activity stations, the facilitated activities that are the heart of each event, and the take-home activities in the Family Kits. Some leader kits also include a short book or other teaching guide. A sample of the relevant Family Kit is included with each Leader Kit.

Currently, we have kits on two topics ready (with a third one in active testing). Click on the link to see the contents of each kit.

READY:
1. Race to the Planets (on the solar system)
  2. Night Sky Adventure (on observing bright stars and constellations)
IN DEVELOPMENT:
3. Moon Mission (on the phases and exploration of the Moon)

How Can I Get Copies of These Kits?

Our kits are still being tested through the Project ASTRO sites around the country. To sign up as a Family Event leader and get our Leader Kits, you must take a leader training workshop at a Project ASTRO site near you.

The advanced prototypes of two of our Family Kits (Race to the Planets and Night Sky Adventure) are now available for a limited time through the ASP’s web-based catalog, The AstroShop.
