Meeting
Schedule and Abstracts
The
full schedule of meeting sessions and abstracts is now available
at the American Astronomical Society Meeting website:
http://www.aas.org/meetings/aas212/schedule_splash.php
Note that this page offers you three options:
1. HTML General Meeting Schedule: This is a meeting overview in
the form of a table of days, times, and main sessions and events.
2. HTML Scientific Sessions Schedule: This is a more detailed
overview of the meeting sessions, including not just the science
but also the educational workshops. You can click on any of the
titles and be taken to a page with more detailed information on
that session.
3. Sessions and Presentations Itinerary: This is a web-based tool
that allows you to browse through the meeting in several different
ways and to create you own customized schedule of the sessions
you are interested in. It takes a bit of getting used to, but
is a powerful way to construct an itinerary for yourself.

The session will welcome symposium participants, explain the way
the rest of the meeting will work, and provide an overview of
international and national plans for the International Year of
Astronomy, including a discussion of the key projects for education
and outreach. The chairs of U.S. IYA Working Groups will also
briefly describe their specific programs and offer suggestions
for how scientists and educators can get involved locally and
nationally.
AAS Plenary Talk (Monday, 11:40 am - 12:30 pm, Ballroom)
Catherine Cesarsky (IAU President): Introducing the International
Year of Astronomy
The next five sessions are "breakouts", where you have
a choice of 4 or 5 different sessions to go to for 90 minutes.
(The numbers before each session are the ones assigned by the
American Astronomical Society in their schedule.)

Plenary
Session II (Wednesday, 2 - 3:30 pm, Room 274)
This closing session will summarize the symposium and deal with
the practical aspects of making the International Year of Astronomy
happen in the U.S. Speakers will address funding issues, the possibility
of a small grants program through the AAS, resources and plans
for evaluation for national and local programs, the IYA web sites
(and other new media presence), communication vehicles among those
working on IYA projects, and plans for publicity and public outreach.
There
will also be a public lecture Tuesday evening, 8 -
9:30 pm (Ballroom)
Dava Sobel: How Galileo and the Telescope Changed Everything |
In addition, there are dozens of poster papers relating to the
International Year of Astronomy on display throughout the meeting
in the poster and exhibit area. Special times are set aside for
viewing the posters and we encourage you to include time for reading
the poster papers in your plans.
