| The ASP Receives a Challenge Grant for Upgrading its Information Technology Systems |
|
The TABASGO Foundation on behalf of Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope has provided the ASP with a challenge grant to upgrade its aging information technology systems. The Foundation challenges friends and supporters of the Society to contribute $27,500 -- one half of the cost of upgrade -- which it will match dollar-for-dollar to reach the total $55,000 cost.
More than one-third of the $27,500 needed for the match has already been pledged or received. The ASP asks its good friends and supporters to consider a donation to this challenge opportunity to help us take full advantage of the Foundation’s generosity by matching it with yours.
The funds will be used to replace aging and failing software and hardware with new and more capable versions, to fund the conversion of our records and databases to the new systems, and to integrate the new systems into our overall operation. This upgrade, bringing our IT infrastructure up to snuff, improving our internal operations, and preparing the Society to efficiently and effectively advance its mission of promoting science literacy through astronomy, is a very important step into the future for the Society, and will also help us to improve our services to members.
Please consider a contribution to this important effort today to help us reach this vital goal. You may contribute through the mail or online; be sure to note that the donation is for the "IT Challenge." |

2009 Fall Fund Drive |
|
|
One
of the key ways the ASP advances the cause of science literacy
is by providing professional development training and resources
for those engaging in astronomy and space science education
and public outreach. The ASP is at the intersection of multiple
networks, such as amateur astronomers, scientists, and formal
and informal educators. Consider making
a gift today to support these networks, the ASP and its
International Year of Astronomy education initiatives. We invite
you to read the 2009 Fall Fund
Drive letter from planet-hunter Geoff Marcy. |

The
ASP takes this opportunity to recognize and thank our 2008
benefactors. These individuals, businesses and organizations
made an investment in the Society and our cause-based mission
to promote science literacy through engagement in astronomy. |

The
International Year of Astronomy 2009 |
|
The
International Year of Astronomy represents a singular opportunity
for stimulating public awareness of the heavens, of astronomical
discovery, and of the value of science as a tool for understanding
the world and creating a better future for all. The year 2009
represents a unique opportunity to spark an interest in the
next generation of scientists who will take our country and
our society into the future. We extend a special invitation
to join us today in support of ASP's initiatives to achieve
these goals and establish a legacy for future generations.
You
can make a difference by making a gift today. By working
together, we can improve science literacy through engagement
in astronomy -- providing for the future as we celebrate the
sky!

| Conference
Series Publication: Providing Resources Internationally |
| |
Since
1988, the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) has published
the renowned Conference Series as part of its century-old
mission to provide resources for astronomers and advance the
science of astronomy. These are excellent, widely recognized
summaries of the state of the field. Most astronomers in the
United States and Canada, and many in Europe and Japan, have
at least one or two ASP Conference Series volumes on their
shelves, and most American science libraries have large collections.
But this is not true in third world countries.
Make
a gift today to support providing the Conference Series
volumes to third world countries. We invite you to read
the document outlining the need and how you can partner
with the ASP to provide this valuable resource internationally. |

"The
ASP was a pioneer in public outreach programs. Today, the
entire astronomical community embraces such efforts as an
increasingly important means to foster awareness of scientific
progress and appreciation of the excitement of contemporary
research. Any contribution today can have a larger-than-life
impact on our society's educational efforts."
